The MacBook Air, Apple’s most popular Mac, is fully, finally back.

And I don’t say that lightly. In October of 2018, Apple brought the Air out of hibernation and gave it a modern makeover. Mostly.It got the updated design, high density, Retina display, and USB-C interface that made the 12-inch MacBook, its once-and-former-successor, so compelling.

But, it also inherited the butterfly keyboard, which was meant to be thinner and more stable, but ultimately proved to be divisive and unreliable.

It got Intel’s coreM low-power chipset, which was fine for casual and ultra-mobile workflows, but wasn’t up as robust as the former Air’s Core I.

And, it was more expensive. Not than the 12-inch or the initial prices of the previous Airs, but than the low, low price the immediately previous Air had dropped to over the years.

Now, some 18 months later, Apple is aiming to fix all of that with an even more modern update. Again, mostly.

  1. Another excellent review Rene, bravo! This year’s MacBook Air seems to be a great choice for someone like me. I own an iPad 7th generation, for media consumption and this laptop will be ideal for word editing and some basic productivity tasks.

  5. This MBA is the best Mac laptop for most people, including and especially those who have more powerful desktops. I wouldn't get it if it was my only computer. I wouldn't get it if I had an iPad Pro 12.9. But if I didn't want an iPad (which I would argue is a much better value proposition) and I had a powerful desktop Mac (like the iMac); and I wanted a secondary computer to take with me or use around the house, I would get this. This is the best internet, web browsing, email championing machine on the planet, IMO. The turbo boosts in short bursts will make performing those tasks just fly – especially with the stellar single core performance and fantastic SSDs, combined with the refinement of MacOS. But anything that requires sustained performance, either graphically or computationally, this is just not the machine to get. Not because its components are not capable, but rather because the cooling is just very, very poor. But again, most people aren't buying this machine to do 'real work.' They're buying it to browse the internet on the couch or at the kitchen table. This computer is fantastic for those things.

  6. Lol; "Apple's current gold" is pretty funny, Rene. It is completely true but funny nonetheless. Apple's gold, silver and space grey have really traded shades over the years, with the latter two more so on the phones and over the past couple of years. You certainly can't just say 'gold' anymore and convey with any sense of accuracy.

  7. Yeah. I just bought the i7. Not here yet, but really excited. Replacing a Late 2103 MBP. As silly as it may sound, I am buying it, in large part, for the ability to Sidecar with my iPad Pro, which my 2013 can't do. As always, thanks for the video, Rene.

  10. This is the first Macbook I would try out after always using windows. Very good display, and I'm especially interested in trying out the OS itself. It finally come to a price what I can call "quite affordable". The only problem in my country we have 27% taxes, so even the base model is 1250$ instead of 999 🙁 I would buy a i5-processor variant with 8gb ram and 512GB SSD, which costs 1620 $… damn it 😀

  14. The 2x bass and more volume claim on the new MBA page is in relation to the pre retina model, not last years model, if you follow down to the footnotes. Misled me at first too.

  20. It’s probably hard to keep pumping out tech vids in the current climate when a certain virus is on the minds of most. Please keep it up, it gives people something to take their minds off stuff for a bit, and look forward to when it all eventually passes. 👍

So before the 2018 iPad Pro's debut, I was sold on the idea that my next computer was going to be a MacBook Air, but then iPad Pro came along… – I didn't bite at the 2018 iPad Pro, because I wasn't at all convinced, but by the end of 2019 I was fully on board. I'd watched countless videos of people showing their workflows. Everything from simple note taking to video editing, the iPad Pro excelled at. – So I found it amusing that the iPad Pro and the MacBook Air both got an update at the same time. Forcing a decision on my part once again. No one would have a problem if I was going to buy the core i5 MacBook Air base configuration, right? Of course not. It's a great computer for the average consumer…. And it's $1300. – But tell people that I'm getting the new iPad Pro with the keyboard in May, and everyone loses their mind. Yelling at me for paying $350 for a keyboard. But to me, it doesn't seem so crazy. Yes, it's an silly expensive accessory, but consider this… IF, I put my $1300 towards an iPad setup, because I love the iPad life and the App Store. I will spend about $1350… For that I'll get a better screen. 2 additional speakers, 3 additional mic's (Apple Studio mic's which are better than the ones on the Air). A better front facing camera to go along with it. A floating design, that allows me to remove the display whenever I want. A more powerful computer, (the current iPad Pro is more than 4 times faster than the Air's new i5 processor). And, 2 rear cameras, that I'll probably never use… And, get the same great keyboard experience I would on the Air. – If you look at it together as a complete package, not just a tablet. Rather my next laptop, which I am. It doesn't seem like an absurd amount of money to spend on a laptop.

  28. If only apple put a LTE/5G cellular option on their latest MBA/MBP lineups, that would be the ultimate portable working machine. No need to depend on wifi anymore.

  30. Did he just say he wished MacBook Air had left right power ports on both sides?Don’t you just enjoy pulling the cable around your MacBook Air? That’s the only I mean “only” reason I am not going to buy MacBook Air.

  31. The 25% more volume and 2x more bass is compared with the NON-RETINA macbook air. Check the "3" FINE PRINT right after their "2x more bass" claim.

  33. It is a nice improvement to the MacBook Air. I however need more power. My 16-inch MacBook Pro will do fine for now.

  36. I think Apple only includes a 720p camera because FaceTime only steams at 720p, so having a higher resolution would be pointless
